Discovering Medieval Chieri – Guided Itinerary
Event – 27 September 2018
The Historical Archives of the City of Chieri safeguard the town’s oldest records. The earliest document, dating back to 1194, is a treaty of alliance with the city of Asti.
The archive’s holdings are remarkably diverse: from accounting ledgers to council resolutions (starting in 1328), from tax registers to military enrollment records. The oldest series is that of the cadastral surveys (catasti or consegnamenti), which dates to 1253.
Hundreds of architectural drawings and plans cover the period from about 1730 to 1950. Among the treasures is a precious medieval map known as the “Carta dell’Impiccato,” dating to 1457.
Chieri is famously known as the “City of a Hundred Towers” of noble families. Even today, visitors can admire exceptionally well-preserved medieval structures of great historical value, such as the chapels of the Cathedral, the Preceptory, and the Church of San Leonardo.
